MY LAST SEMESTER AT THE UNIVERSITY |
The second cycle began, my last semester at the university and the second semester that I begin on line. It has been a learning and growing process for all.
We now have had to explain in documents, in forums and in surveys our ideas, arguments and decisions. This has forced us to edit better, to be more concise, to be better communicators. What we write or say remains recorded and available for all to see, which motivates us to give better answers and to search for excellence in everything we do.
Presentations have had to be at higher levels. We have left behind our old saying “this can be improved with an explanation”. Or “I can better explain my idea in person”. Separated from a distance, it has become more important to utilize more and better tools to materialize our ideas: in prototypes, in designs, in videos or in images.
Our professors became more up-to- date, they learned and have made efforts so that each virtual class has the same quality as an in-person class. Last semester they realized that being on line is very different from being in the classroom. The courses changed, they evolved and, in the search, to provide a unique learning experience they found tools that would allow them to explore paths not considered earlier. What in its moment was an “optional software where we could simulate what we were doing”, turned into the best, and in some cases, the unique tool to continue with our learning.
Of course, not everything is positive. I would lie if I said that there were no negative aspects in the on-line semester. Every day we spent from 3 to 5 continuous hours receiving classes in front of a computer. Our willpower and motivation can be very strong, but eyes get tired, the back hurts and feet become exasperated. It’s been more than 50 days from the last day I saw my friends and every day I miss them more. This is the last semester and I get scared when I think that it may be the last time in which we will all be together.
A radical change in the way of learning at all levels has changed in a few months. We can see it as “a situation that will soon pass” or as a unique opportunity to refine competences and abilities necessary to be successful in this new reality.
Every week we face new challenges, different scenarios and unexpected changes. Everything changes and will continue to change. In this sea of possibilities, all of us are in the same boat, doing our best effort to keep it afloat and in the right direction. It is in these waters that I am grateful for the support of the persons and institutions who trust in FUVG, because their constant and unconditional support are the light that shows us the path to follow.

Layla Rojas Morales
Fifth Year of Agroforestal Engineering
I concluded my practices as “home office” in the Municipality in Chimaltenango, in addition I had to reinvent the Seminar course that I teach at ITEC-Altiplano, with pre-recorded classes and activities and solving my student´s doubts via WhatsApp, because I didn’t have the appropriate equipment at home. We worked the second semester virtually, and thanks to the “Student x Student Campaign” promoted by the Del Valle Educational Group, I got support to buy Internet service and receive a Tablet. Now I can teach and receive my classes on-line.
Miguel Javier Castañeda Tellez
Third Year of Agricultural and Livestock Engineering
It was a real challenge to convert regular classes to virtual lessons, first of all because I did not have the adequate equipment and the Internet signal is not optimal. In order to overcome these obstacles, during the first semester I worked and studied at a friend’s house who loaned me her equipment to connect to my classes and to be able to deliver my work. In this second semester, thanks to the Student x Student Campaign I received support with Internet and got a Tablet; currently, I am receiving virtual classes at home and I can deliver my homework and assigned work without a problem.
Bryan Oswaldo Catalán Barrios
Fourth Year of Agricultural and Livestock Engineering
Because of the COVID-19, classes in virtual mode have been a challenge, because I did not have access to Internet, and I also did not own a computer. In the first months of on-line education I had to go to my aunt’s house who loaned me her equipment so that I did not fall behind in my classes. I wasn’t sure if I would be able to continue in the second semester, however, the Del Valle Educational Group helped me with Internet and with a Tablet, so that I wouldn’t need to abandon my studies. I am grateful for all the support from the Student x Student Campaign.
Layla attended the Campus to receive her Tablet which allowed her to have a tool to receive her classes as a student and to teach classes as profesor as well.
Miguel Javier Castañeda Tellez visited the Campus to receive his Tablet in order to have the proper tools to receive classes and to carry out educational activities.
Bryan Oswaldo Catalán Barrios visited the Campus to receive his Tablet and with that he had proper tools to receive his classes and to carry out educational activities.
The Student x Student Campaign, made up of the University Students Association, student groups from our Faculties and the Delvallerian Community, together we continue to support new initiatives and activities to raise funds.
There have been scheduled E-sport tournaments, nutrition challenges and we will soon have a virtual race. Below is the schedule of activities, which has the links for you to sign up, participate and continue supporting our students.
